Firefighters raced to a blaze Monday that burned through the roof of a large home located near Fort Washington Country Club in northeast Fresno.
A neighbor saw smoke and flames coming from the roof of the home at 10199 North Ponderosa Ave. and called the fire department at 9:20 a.m., said Fresno FD spokesman Hector Vasquez.
More than 20 firefighters and two battalion chiefs responded and had the blaze contained in about 40 minutes, Vasquez explained.
A good portion of the attic burned, and the roof was covered in wood-shake shingles, Vasquez. He did not know the initial extent of damage.

The home is about 4,100 square feet in size. No one was at the residence when the flames broke out, Vasquez said.
The cause was undetermined, and an investigator was at the home to trying to learn how the fire began, said Vasquez.
