Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, told students Friday at Fresno State that the Affordable Care Act is "history-making."
Huerta added that if the students want to give the late Cesar Chavez a gift on March 31 -- his birthday and the deadline to enroll in insurance plans -- "go out there and help us out and get people signed up."
Huerta is speaking at two events at Fresno State on Friday.
This morning, she appeared in a sociology class, "Diversity in the United States," where she joined Covered California Executive Director Peter V. Lee to discuss the state's marketplace for the federal Affordable Care Act.
Never miss a local story.
This afternoon, Huerta will speak at the Latina Leadership Conference, which runs from noon to 4 p.m. in the Kremen Education Building as part of the university's Women's Herstory Month observance.
Earlier this month, Huerta made radio and online ads aimed at promoting Covered California to Latinos, who represent about 60% of the state’s uninsured population. Open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act ends March 31 -- which is also Cesar Chavez Day honoring the late co-founder of the UFW.
