A 33-year-old Fresno man who needs a pacemaker, but has no health insurance, has made his fund-raising goal.
Dion King, a construction truck driver, and his family held car washes Saturday and Sunday to raise money for the surgery. On the www.gofundme.com web site, they said that they have raised more than $10,000 and were asking for no further donations.
"If it was not for all of the people who love Dion, we wouldn't have been able to have the car wash at all," they said. And they thanked car washers who washed vehicles all day for two days in the sun and never complained.
Dion has had a pacemaker since age 16. Doctors have told him the device in his chest now likely will stop working in mid-August.
Never miss a local story.
On Friday, Dion said Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital had agreed to waive its costs for the surgery, the biggest expense.
He said no date has been set for the surgery.
