Kaiser Permanente-Fresno has donated $20,000 to Fresno Unified School District to purchase 2,150 asthma inhaler spacers for students with the chronic lung disease to use at school.
The district on Tuesday announced the funding for the devices, which increase the amount of medicine sent to the lungs when an inhaler is used.
More than 12,500 Fresno Unified pupils, or 17.1% of the district's students, have asthma. That's compared to the nationwide average of 9.1% of kids ages 5 to 17. In Fresno County, 20.2% of youngsters in that age group suffer from the disease.
