Members of the Tulare County Association of Realtors rolled their sleeves up on Wednesday for a day of volunteer work with a Visalia nonprofit housing developer.

More than 80 real estate professionals joined Self-Help Enterprises to frame exterior walls, install siding and interior trim, and to paint and landscape some of the 28 affordable houses under construction next to the builder's Goshen Village II rental housing community.

The volunteer day was an opportunity to promote camaraderie within the association, said Susan Renteria, chairwoman of the group’s community benefit committee which organized the event. It was also held in conjunction with NeighborWorks Week and National Homeownership Month, two nationwide celebrations that promote homeownership.

“We all get so busy with our Realtor lives and lender lives,” said Renteria, a real estate agent with Modern Broker. “We wanted to get us all together working for the common good, for one thing that makes us more like a community in our organization rather than individual offices.”

NeighborWorks Week is sponsored by NeighborWorks America, a leader in affordable housing and community development, to bring volunteers together for community improvement projects. The United States Department of Agriculture celebrates National Homeownership Month in June to highlight homeownership in rural communities.

In Goshen, Realtors and lenders worked side-by-side installing door knobs, shower rods, deadbolts and and “all the stuff that we as Realtors are usually selling on these properties,” Renteria said. “It was amazing.”
