Six of nine central San Joaquin Valley-based banks and 10 of 15 credit unions headquartered in the region have been listed as five-star institutions by an independent bank research company based on their financial performance in the first quarter of the year.
BauerFinancial Inc. of Florida issues quarterly ratings of banks and credit unions nationwide, analyzing income, capital ratios and assets reported to federal regulatory agencies.
Its scale runs from five- and four-star “recommended” institutions to zero stars. None of the Valley-based institutions were ranked lower than 3 1/2 stars by the company.
Five-star banks in the region were Bank of the Sierra in Porterville, Central Valley Community Bank in Fresno, Valley Business Bank in Visalia, Fresno First Bank in Fresno, Suncrest Bank in Visalia and Murphy Bank in Fresno.
Credit unions receiving five-star Bauer ratings were Educational Employees Credit Union, Fresno County Federal Credit Union, San Joaquin Power Employees Credit Union, United Local Credit Union, First California Federal Credit Union, Fresno Fire Department Credit Union and Greater Valley Credit Union, all of Fresno; Families and Schools Together (FAST) Credit Union and Kings Federal Credit Union, both in Hanford; and Valley Oak Credit Union in Three Rivers.
Four-star credit unions were Tucoemas Federal Credit Union in Visalia, Tulare County Federal Credit Union in Tulare, and Fresno Grangers Federal Credit Union and SoValTel Federal Credit Union, both in Fresno.
The Fresno Police Department Credit Union is not included in the Bauer ratings because its shares are insured by an agency other than the National Credit Union Administration.
