The opening of a second Sunnyside Bicycles store in Reedley in June will mark something of a homecoming for owners John and Vanessa McCracken.
John McCracken attended Immanuel High School in Reedley for a year; his wife went to Reedley College. The couple have operated their store at Kings Canyon Road and Fowler Avenue in southeast Fresno for about five years, building up a loyal following of customers from across Fresno and the central San Joaquin Valley — including Reedley. Some people even followed them to Fresno from Madera, where they ran a bike store for eight years.
The new store will take over the space now occupied by Bike Trax at 1760 11th Street, just off H Street in downtown Reedley. John McCracken said he and his wife considered buying the business back in 2002, before they started their first bicycle store in Madera, but the timing just wasn’t right. Now that the owner of Bike Trax is retiring at the end of May, McCracken said, the building owner reached out to him again to see if Sunnyside Bicycles was interested in the space. “We’re not buying the business, we’re not purchasing the store, we’re just leasing the space,” McCracken said.
John McCracken said he believes the Reedley location is a good one. “Reedley has a very active downtown, and we already have a relationship with that store, referring customers back and forth,” he said. “The store is actually on the city’s bike trail that runs through downtown, and Reedley College is just down the street. We see a lot of opportunities there.”
The McCrackens said they’ve been planning to expand their current store, stuffed into a 2,100-square-foot space in a shopping center. The Reedley store is about 3,800 square feet. “We won’t know what to do with all that space,” Vanessa McCracken said.
The McCrackens aim to open the Reedley store on June 16, starting with a staff of three led by Vanessa McCracken. “We’re going to do a remodel, new floors, paint and fixtures before we open,” John McCracken said. A manufacturer representative from Trek Bicycle Corp., the main brand carried by Sunnyside, met with the couple in recent days to visit the Reedley location “And we’re already planning a shop ride, from Fresno to Reedley and back, for that first Saturday, June 20,” McCracken added.
