The Ylarregui family of Madera has sold the Basque Company, makers of a well-known meat tenderizer. Raymond Ylarregui founded the company 35 years ago after being encouraged by family and friends to bottle his marinade.
The Basque Company’s tenderizer has been sold widely in the San Joaquin Valley, and over the years the company developed other products, including a seafood marinade and meat seasoning.
Michael Ylarrequi said the new owner is Julio Lopez of Fresno. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
But Michael Ylarrequi said Lopez is continuing to operate the company using the same family recipes.
“The Basque Company will still go on and be available at all the places people would normally find it,” Ylarrequi said. “We were just looking for a change.”
Michael Ylarrequi, who enjoys exercising, plans to become a personal trainer, focusing on helping older clients become physically fit.
