Mo'Nique's stunning performance stands out in 'Precious'

There are rare times when one performance can be so soul-jarring amazing that it eclipses even the best of films, such as Daniel Day Lewis in "My Left Foot" or Heather Ledger in "The Dark Knight."

It's even more staggering when that performance comes from such an unexpected source as found in "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire." Read more →

Bullock thrilled to slow down a bit

LOS ANGELES -- Despite her lofty Hollywood status, Sandra Bullock's ready to take a break from acting.

'Planet 51' plot, performances drag

"Planet 51" takes off like a rocket with its glitzy and alien look, but it never achieves orbit because of a sputtering plot and lackluster performances.

The film looks at what it would be like for a planet of Sea Monkey-looking inhabitants, who seem to be stuck in the '50s, to get a close encounter of the Earthly kind. Their isolated world of backyard barbecues, comic book reading and walking their mechanical dogs is sent into a turmoil. Read more →

'Blind Side' plays it safe as holiday tear-jerker

There's nothing about "The Blind Side" you don't see coming. Director John Lee Hancock hits all of the familiar family and sports notes that drive these kinds of movies. There's nothing wrong with that formula, especially at the holidays. It just would have been nice if Hancock hadn't played it quite so safe.

Teenager Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) is living on the streets of Memphis. One night he's spotted, alone and cold, by local socialite Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock). She's the kind of Southern woman who doesn't accept no for an answer, and soon Oher is a guest in the Tuohy house. Over the next few months, he goes from guest to being part of the family. 'New Moon' clings to book -- and that's not a good thing

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" is a dead-on adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer book. That’s not necessarily a good thing because the second novel in the romantic vampire series is considered by some fans to be the weakest of the four stories.

If you adore the second book, the film won’t disappoint. If you haven’t read the second book, you should pick another theater because the movie will feel long and labored. Read more →

Holidays at home

It's the most wonderful time of the TV year if you love holiday programming. The networks and cable channels will load up their schedules for the next few weeks with holiday film favorites like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Story," along with animated programs like "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

Mixed in with old are some new holiday programs. Joining this year's slate is "American Idol" alumnus Carrie Underwood, whose "Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special" airs at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 on KMPH (Channel 26.1). She will perform new music from her upcoming album plus a few holiday classics. Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, David Cook and Kristin Chenoweth are her special guests. Read more →

Welcome home, Jason.

All of Glover's ups and downs

Throughout the Top 20 competition, Jason Glover's fortunes on "So You Think You Can Dance" shot up and down more violently than the beleaguered vocal cords of banshee judge Mary Murphy. Not all of it was Jason's doing: Choreographers and partners were the luck of the draw. Here's a roller-coaster recap:

Week 1: Jason and partner Caitlin Kinney wow the judges with a Bollywood routine. Praise all around. Read more →
