Why is FresnoBee.com requiring me to become a member to access the Web site?

FresnoBee.com decided to move to a member-only Web site for a few reasons. Like many other publishers, we are collecting visitor information in order to gain the capability to deliver targeted news content as well as advertising content that is likely to be of interest to you. The more information we have about your interests and preferences, the better we can make decisions as to what additional news and services to provide.

Our sign-up process means you won't have to remember your password every time you come to the site. When you're a member, you'll be able to access all our pages to get all the excellent news and sports coverage you've come to expect from FresnoBee.com. Plus, you'll be able to sign up for special offers, receive our information-packed e-mail newsletters, search our archives, view classified ads, enter contests and more.

We understand that many of you may see this as an inconvenience, but we hope you'll also see the benefits of creating a personalized information service that you can trust as an unbiased, professional news source covering your world. We also realize that Internet privacy is a real concern, but the information you share with us will not be sold or given to other companies. It will only be used to improve the services we provide.

If you have questions or concerns, please consult our privacy policy or send us an e-mail.

Is there a fee to use FresnoBee.com?

No. FresnoBee.com is offered free of charge.

What does FresnoBee.com do with the personal data collected from members?

When you become a member, we can help our potential advertisers better understand our readers by sharing aggregated audience demographic information that does not identify you individually.

Although you can sign up for special offers from our advertisers, we won't share your personally identifiable information with a third party without your permission. This means you won't receive e-mails from anyone other than The Fresno Bee, FresnoBee.com and our other affiliated Web sites, as a result of becoming a member.

We may send you occasional member e-mail regarding your FresnoBee.com account, new Web site features and new special offers. You may unsubscribe to these at any time.

I've forgotten or lost my password. What do I do?

You do NOT need to re-register. You may retrieve your password by clicking here. Please follow the instructions and your password will be e-mailed to you.

How do I change my password?

You will need to know your current user name and password to change your password. Please click here and follow the steps indicated.

My e-mail address has changed. How do I update my FresnoBee.com account?

If your e-mail address has changed, make sure you are logged in and change the e-mail field on the "Edit Account" page. Become a Member page.

What are cookies and why does FresnoBee.com use them?

A "cookie" is a small data file that is placed in your browser and allows FresnoBee.com to recognize you each time you visit this site. Cookies help FresnoBee.com identify you and your access privileges on our site, eliminating the need for you to type in your password each time you visit. Cookies do not contain or collect any personal information that you have not already given us.

Instead, they allow us to see which parts of our site you have used so that we can better serve you when you return to our site. Cookies may be used to provide you with information and special opportunities tailored to your interests.

We use a cookie to allow you to log in to FresnoBee.com automatically without entering your user name and password each time you visit the Web site. This cookie remains on your hard disk indefinitely or until you delete your cookie file.

What happens if I do not accept your cookies?

If you do not accept the cookie set by FresnoBee.com, we will not have a way of identifying you as a registered member. As a result, you will have to log in each time you try to access a secured area. Please note that we will not give out your personally identifiable information. For more information, please read our privacy policy.

What information will you be tracking with my cookie?

The cookie will be used to authenticate you as a registered member. In addition, the cookie will track the date and time you were on the site and pages you visit. We will be using this information to determine which areas of our site are of most interest to our readers as well as our advertisers. We will use your basic account information and site preferences to offer more news and information that match your interests. We will not share any data with advertisers that is not in aggregate form. For example, we may tell an advertiser that 50% of our readers read stories about mobile phones last month, but nothing that personally identifies you as an individual.

If I become a member and accept cookies, will I receive unsolicited e-mail from you or any third party?

FresnoBee.com occasionally may need to contact you regarding your member account. You will not receive unsolicited e-mails from third parties through our Web site.

What are you doing to protect my privacy?

FresnoBee.com has a strict privacy policy and we are committed to respecting your privacy rights as our guests. We realize that you are entrusting us with personal information and we will not share this with any third party. Information about our site visitors as a whole may be aggregated and shared, but not individual information. For example, we may share with an advertiser that 65% of our registered users are male, 70% of our female users enjoy reading books or 50% of our visitors read news stories about weight loss last month. If you have any additional concerns, please consult our privacy policy

I'm already registered, but your Web site keeps telling me to log in. Why is this happening?

Once you've registered as an online member, you shouldn’t have to log in every time you visit www.Fresnobee.com. Our registration process sets a cookie on your computer’s hard drive that remains active until one of the following occurs:

  • You explicitly log off our Web site after every visit.
  • You are using a different computer each time you visit our Web site.
  • You have deleted your cookie manually.
  • You have software installed on your computer (such as anti-adware, anti-spam or anti-tracking software) that automatically deletes cookies.
  • You have your browser set to automatically delete cookies after a set period of time.

Please check your browser's help files to make sure it allows third parties to set cookies on your computer.
