Two men who were trying to refuel a disabled vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 5 were killed when they were hit by an approaching vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.

A 23-year-old man from Westlake Village was traveling north on I-5 just north of Manning Avenue when he pulled the vehicle onto the shoulder and stopped. A 21-year-old Kerman man working in an adjacent field jumped the freeway fence to help.

As the two men refueled the vehicle, Cynthia Merritt, 62, of Fresno approached from behind and hit the men and the vehicle, the CHP said. Both men died at the scene.

Merritt was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with major injuries. A passenger in the parked vehicle was unhurt.
