Officials from Fresno County Superior Court will meet Nov. 19 to discuss the possible closure of the court's Fowler branch.

The state's fiscal crisis has forced the Superior Court to consider closing the Fowler branch in June. The meeting to discuss the possible closure will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 127 E. Merced St. in Fowler.

Anyone who would like to comment about the proposed closure can e-mail the court at Infodesk@fresno.courts.ca.gov. More information about the possible closure will be posted at FresnoSuperiorCourt.org by Tuesday.

Doctor honored with UC endowed chair

Dr. Steven Parks, longtime chief of surgery and program director of the surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno Medical Education Program, has been recognized by colleagues with an endowed chair named in his honor.

Endowed chairs are distinguished faculty positions. Money is raised and invested to establish the chair and fund it into the future. Officials said the new chair will help UCSF Fresno's recruiting efforts for its surgery program.

The Steven Parks Endowed Chair-Surgery is the second endowed chair at UCSF Fresno. Dr. James W. Davis, program director of the acute care surgery fellowship, began the campaign in 2002.

With the help of community and UCSF Fresno alumni, Davis raised $500,000 -- the amount necessary to establish an endowed chair at UC. The goal is to raise $1 million.

Fresno State student elected tops at FFA

Fresno State's Levy Randolph, a freshman agriculture business student from Hemet, has been elected the top student leader of the National FFA Organization.

Randolph is the third Fresno State student to serve as president of the organization that represents more than 500,000 FFA members. He was elected at the organization's convention last month.

In the next year, Randolph is expected to travel more than 100,000 miles, visit about 40 states and tour Japan. He also will meet with top leaders in business, government and education.
