Local briefs: Meth seized, three nabbed in drug probe

Fresno County sheriff's detectives seized more than $150,000 worth of meth and arrested three men in a narcotics investigation, Sheriff Margaret Mims announced Friday.

The investigation by the Sheriff's Narcotics Enforcement Team lasted several weeks and focused on the sales and distribution of meth in the Fresno area.

Illegal narcotics activity can be reported to the narcotics hotline at (800) 660-1086. Callers can remain anonymous.

Road work

Grantland/Barstow intersection to close

Motorists may experience some delays as the intersection of Grantland and Barstow avenues will be closed for three days and Barstow from Grantland to Garfield Avenue will be closed for about six weeks for the installation of a sewer line.

Closures begin Monday. Detours will be in place in all directions.

Signing of water bill set for Friant Dam

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be in the Fresno area Monday to sign the $11 billion water bond passed Wednesday by the Legislature.

The governor will be at Friant Dam at 2 p.m. to sign the bond package. The bond could potentially include money for a dam east of Fresno and a proposed canal to move water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to the Valley's west side.

Robotics contest today in Madera

The first-ever Mad Town Throw Down Robotics Competition will be held today at the Madera High School gym.

The competition, which will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will showcase students' innovation in robotics.

Admission is free.

Food drive planned

The Fresno Teachers Association will hold a community food drive and collection Monday at Tornino's Catering & Event Center starting at 4:30 p.m.

The goal is to distribute the collections to needy children and their families over the holidays by working with Catholic Charities.

More than 2 tons of food was collected during last year's drive.
