A man arrested in Arizona must stand trial in the 1995 shooting deaths of two men at a cockfight near Parlier, a Fresno County Superior Court judge ruled Monday.
Judge Hilary Chittick also said there was enough evidence presented at Jaime Morales' preliminary hearing to order him to face charges of attempted murder of another man and a 15-year-old girl.
After two days of testimony, witnesses identified Morales as the person who fatally shot Porfirio Silva Gutierrez, 23, of Selma, and Rodimiro Quiroz, 27, of Parlier when a fight broke out after the cockfight at a Super Bowl party.
Witnesses also said Morales wounded Louisa Silva and her father, Manuel Silva Sr., during the melee.
Morales was arrested in Phoenix in July on a warrant in connection with the killings. He was returned to Fresno County this month.
Clovis man gets life term for lewd acts
A Clovis man was sentenced Monday in Fresno County Superior Court to 205 years to life in prison after being convicted of lewd acts with a minor.
Rudy Rios, 43, received the lengthy prison sentence because he is a habitual sex offender, prosecutor Robert Mangano said.
A jury in April convicted Rios of two felony counts of lewd acts on a minor and two felony counts of lewd acts with force on a minor.
Rios fathered a child with the young girl, who was not identified.
In handing down the penalty, Judge W. Kent Hamlin cited Rios' prior convictions for burglary in 1992 and a forcible sexual offense in 1994.
