An overloaded extension cord sparked a fire Saturday afternoon that caused extensive damage to a central Fresno house.

Residents in the house on the 700 block of North Van Ness Avenue smelled smoke coming from a bedroom, went outside and called 911, officials said.

Firefighters got the fire under control before it spread beyond the bedroom and attic above, and no one was injured. One occupant was concerned about six cats that were missing, but investigators said they likely ran to safety.

Damage is estimated at $80,000, officials said. Loss of personal property is about $12,000.
