McLane High School received a $2,500 check Monday for winning the GOT MILK? breakfast challenge.
Students won the three-week competition by increasing breakfast consumption at the school by 65% compared to the same time last year, beating out seven other Fresno high schools.
The campaign was aimed at boosting participation in the school breakfast program because studies show that skipping the first meal of the day affects a student's ability to learn.
Fresno Unified officials said breakfast consumption during the challenge went up by 30% -- more than 6,000 students -- in all the high schools.
Fresno Unified Superintendent Michael Hanson presented the check at a lunch party held at McLane.
The school expects to use the money to purchase a new public-address system.
