About 20 businesses in Visalia had windows broken during the weekend by vandals passing by in a car, police said. The windows were hit Saturday and Sunday by people using a BB gun, slingshot or similar device, Sgt. Steve Phillips said.

A witness described a car seen in one incident as a black 1990s Honda with tinted windows.

Anyone with information is asked to call detective Sarah Wray at (559) 713-4047.

Carnival ride operator arrested

A Chowchilla carnival ride operator was arrested at the Caruthers Fair on Saturday for being under the influence of narcotics and parole violations, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.

Debbie Ann Scougal, 43, was under the influence of methamphetamine and had been drinking beer and taking cold medicine to mask the effects of the drug, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies escorted Scougal from the area while fair management immediately replaced her with another employee.

Scougal was on parole for felony grand theft in another county, deputies said.

Fresno Co. to close waste site

Fresno County will stop accepting garbage at its Coalinga waste site Oct. 16.

The county decided to stop operations because of increased operational costs and diminished deliveries, said John Thompson, county resources manager.

Haulers and residents of some unincorporated areas use the dump at 30825 Lost Hills Road, about one mile west of Coalinga. The next-closest waste site is on American Avenue near Kerman, 19 miles away, Thompson said.

The Board of Supervisors considered options for the Coalinga site earlier this year, including allowing the city of Coalinga to find options for funding it. Those efforts fell through, Thompson said.

Food bank to receive $5,000

Fresno's Community Food Bank is among seven California and Arizona food banks receiving donations from the Comerica Charitable Foundation.

The foundation is contributing $35,000 to food banks where Comerica Bank has offices -- $5,000 each in Fresno, Los Angeles, Irvine, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Phoenix.

The grants will be used for Thanksgiving food programs, including providing turkeys to families.
