Recall of state Sen. Denham to go on ballot
It's on.
Voters will be asked whether state Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, needs to be recalled, and if so, who should take his place.
The recall effort -- spearheaded by Democrats because of Denham's opposition to last year's budget -- has enough signatures to go before voters, the Secretary of State's Office announced Tuesday.

Petitions to recall Parlier school board members are thrown out
Recall efforts against three Parlier Unified school board members will not move forward after Fresno County elections officials found significant irregularities on the recall petitions.
Recall supporters sought to remove trustees Benjamin Tamez Jr. and Mary Helen Villanueva, who were elected to the school board last November, and Enrique "Rick" Maldonado, who has been a trustee for nearly three years.
The recall proponents accused three board members of micromanaging and not supporting Superintendent Rick Rodriguez.

Recall fight may turn out to be a plus for Denham
SACRAMENTO -- He denounced it as a political stunt and power play, but was the recall campaign against state Sen. Jeff Denham the best thing to ever happen to his political career?
The upside for the Atwater Republican grew immensely this week when Senate leader Don Perata, D-Oakland, called off the campaign.
Denham, who has raised considerable funds to fight the effort, vowed Thursday to continue his defense because his name will still be on the ballot June 3.

Denham recall effort dropped
SACRAMENTO -- Citing the prospects of another lengthy state budget stalemate, state Senate leader Don Perata on Wednesday dropped his recall campaign of Sen. Jeff Denham, a development that surprised even Denham.
Perata launched the recall after the Atwater Republican angered him during last year's 53-day state budget stalemate when Denham joined his GOP colleagues in voting against the spending plan.
At a late-afternoon news conference on the steps of the Capitol, Perata said he decided not to pursue the recall because of the state's worsening financial condition.
SACRAMENTO — The campaign to recall state Sen. Roy Ashburn has stalled, pretty much before it had even begun.
The California Secretary of State's Office today said the Bakersfield businessman leading the effort has failed to submit enough valid signatures along with a notice of intention to recall the senator.
Of the 51 signatures turned in, only 31 were from people registered in Senate District 18. That's nine signatures short.
Michael Moore, a Libertarian and pharmacist, launched the campaign because he is upset that Ashburn, R-Bakersfield, voted for tax hikes as part of the recent state budget deal.
He said he will refile the petition soon. But first he has to again serve Ashburn with a notice.
"It's going to happen fast," he said.
If Moore submits enough signatures for the petition, he would then have to collect 42,376 more to put the measure on the ballot.
Such efforts can get expensive. Moore said he hasn't raised any money yet.
"I'm obviously very naive and inexperienced in this whole process," he said.
Ashburn was one of six Republican lawmakers to vote for the tax hikes.
Others include Assembly GOP leader Mike Villines, R-Clovis, and Sen. Dave Cogdill, R-Modesto.
