A man who police said ran from officers with a gun in his hand was taken into custody Thursday in east-central Fresno after a yard-to-yard search that prompted the lockdown of nearby Vinland Elementary.
Police Lt. Tom Rowe said an officer tried to pull over an SUV about 7:30 a.m. for allegedly speeding through a school crossing near Cedar and Gettysburg avenues. The 33-year-old SUV driver sped into a subdivision, jumped out near Ashcroft and John Albert avenues and ran, carrying what looked like a semi-automatic pistol. As he ran, the man discarded the weapon and other items, Rowe said.
Officers learned the man had run into a home, where he had shaved his head. When contacted by police, the man surrendered, Rowe said. He was booked on suspicion of possessing a concealed firearm, a loaded weapon and a gang charge, according to jail information.
