A robbery suspect shot by a Fresno police officer Wednesday afternoon was treated for multiple wounds at Community Regional Medical Center and booked at Fresno County Jail.
Officers found Dedrick Mitchell, 22, about 1 a.m. Thursday hiding in an apartment on the 2000 block of South Chance Avenue, spokesman Jeff Cardinale said. The apartment is near the scene of the shooting, which took place just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. About 30 officers searched for the man after the shooting, not knowing whether he had been wounded.
The shooting happened near Woodward and Chance avenues after Mitchell tried to rob a street vendor, Cardinale said.
Mitchell was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and a misdemeanor weapons charge.
On Wednesday, after the shooting, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said the bandit pretended to have a weapon and demanded cash from the vendor, but the vendor did not see a weapon. The vendor yelled that he was being robbed and someone called police.
An officer who was about a half-block away responded and ran after the bandit, who Dyer said was armed with a knife. The suspect and the officer got into a confrontation and the officer fired at the suspect, the chief said. Police said the suspect was hit many times.
