Shooting suspect tied to Hawk case
Police on Wednesday unveiled a strange twist in Monday's shooting of a Fresno police officer, announcing that a man wanted in the case also is "a person of interest" in the disappearance of Hanford mother Debbie Hawk.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said an arrest warrant has been issued for Joaquin Maltos Figueroa, 25, of Fresno.
Officer Brian Nieto was shot three times Monday evening during a traffic stop in central Fresno. He remained in critical condition Wednesday at University Medical Center, where he underwent a third surgery because of damage to vital organs and internal bleeding.

Men arrested at park
Two men have been arrested in an attempted robbery Sunday night at Quigley Park in west-central Fresno in which one of the suspects fired a shot into the air, Fresno police reported Tuesday.

Suspect was unarmed when shot
Joaquin Figueroa was unarmed when he was shot and killed by a police officer, ending what authorities call a four-month Fresno crime spree but potentially costing investigators information about the death of a missing Hanford mother.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Friday that the shooting was appropriate because Figueroa ignored commands to show his hands, had a reputation for being armed and was suspected in the violent crime spree, which included at least one murder. He said Figueroa also attempted to kill Fresno police officer Brian Nieto during a traffic stop Monday night in central Fresno.
But with Figueroa's death, police fear they lost a clue in the June disappearance of Hanford mother Debbie Hawk; police had identified Figueroa, 25, as a "person of interest" in that case, which has attracted national interest.

Fresno police fire 35 rounds, kill man
Fresno police officers shot and killed a 23-year-old man they say drew a gun and fired at them early Saturday in a southeast Fresno apartment complex.
Stephen Willis -- a Buchanan High School graduate who was studying at ITT Technical Institute -- died after two officers fired 35 rounds at him in the parking lot of the apartment complex where he lived.
The officers feared for their lives, Police Chief Jerry Dyer said in a news conference Saturday afternoon. Investigators believe Willis fired once at officers, Dyer said.

Suspect fatally shot
Police shot and killed Joaquin Figueroa, sought in the shooting of a Fresno police officer and a string of other violent crimes, following a stakeout in a southeast Fresno neighborhood Thursday afternoon.
The death ended a three-day search for Fresno resident Figueroa, 25, who was suspected of gravely wounding Brian Nieto when the motorcycle officer attempted to pull him over Monday night.
Police, who had mounted a massive hunt for the suspect, caught up with Figueroa once again on Thursday and shot him after he dived into a vehicle in which he may have had weapons, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.
A Merced man fatally shot himself after he abducted his ex-wife and two children from their Fresno home early Friday and crashed their car in Kern County, police said.
Yeng Vang, 24, of Merced shot himself while driving and then crashed, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Friday afternoon.
Dyer said Vang abducted his ex-wife and two children from a central Fresno home about 1:45 a.m. The abduction triggered an Amber Alert and a broadcast to the California Highway Patrol.
Initially, Vang headed northbound on Highway 99 toward Merced. But at some point he turned and headed south toward Kern County.
About 2:30 a.m. he crashed into the center divider of Highway 99 near Norris Road. He then hit a big rig before striking the center divider again and coming to rest on the highway median.
When CHP officers found him, he already had shot himself in the head, Dyer said. Vang was later pronounced dead at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.
Vang's ex-wife, who is 18, and their two children -- a 2 1/2-year-old boy and 1 1/2-year-old girl -- were not injured, Dyer said.
Vang was already on probation for domestic violence involving his ex-wife, Dyer said. About a year ago, she left him and moved to Fresno with their two children.
Dyer said trouble was brewing, because Vang confronted his ex-wife Monday in Fresno and forced her and their son into his vehicle. "Vang struck the victim, pulled her hair and threatened to kill her in a field," Dyer said.
She jumped out of the moving truck and escaped, but she had to leave her son in the vehicle, Dyer said.
The next day, Vang's father told the young woman she could pick up her son and her purse at a relative's home, Dyer said.
Early Friday, Vang went to his ex-wife's home armed with a handgun, Dyer said. He then forced her and the two children into a car and sped off.
Using cellular phone technology, Dyer said, police were able to track Vang's movements on Highway 99.
According to Dyer, Vang told his ex-wife that he didn't want to go back to jail and that he would rather kill himself. While traveling 70 mph, Vang then placed a .22-caliber handgun to his head and pulled the trigger, Dyer said.
