DA Smittcamp to speak at Healthy Marriage Coalition dinner
Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp will speak about the importance of healthy relationships at the Healthy Marriage Coalition’s annual dinner at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at New Covenant Community Church, 1744 E. Nees Ave., Fresno. Speed painter Rick Alonzo will paint the “five languages of love” that will be auctioned off during the event. McFarland coach to speak at Sonrise Baptist
McFarland High School coach Jim White, whose championship cross country program was recently celebrated in the Disney movie “McFarland, USA,” will speak during a special “Back to Church Month” worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at Sonrise Baptist Church of Clovis, 3105 Locan Ave. The free event will include a noon barbecue lunch, music and bounce houses for children.

Armenian grape blessing celebration
Another Armenian Blessing of the Grapes’ celebration – an annual tradition to bless farmers and ask for a good harvest – is Sunday, Aug. 16 at the California Armenian Home, 6720 E. Kings Canyon Road, Fresno. The event, held by St. Paul Armenian Church, runs from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It starts with a Divine Liturgy church service, followed by the grape blessing, food available for purchase, and traditional Armenian music by the Richard Hagopian Band.
Vertical Church Band performs
Vertical Church Band will perform worship songs with Meredith Andrews in a tour date sponsored by Harvest Bible Chapel at Riverpark Bible Church, 7500 N. Millbrook Ave., Fresno, at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 800-965-9324 or online for $12, or for $20 the night of the show.
St. Joachim’s Church in Madera, 401 W. Fifth St., will host its Harvest Festival 6-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 and Saturday, Aug. 22. The festival will include raffle prizes, food booths, a farmers market, kids games and prizes, folklorico dancers and music by The Hype, The Angel Republic Band, Elvis “Jeremy” Pearce and Gela. Fresno Greek Fest
St. George Greek Orthodox Church will host the 55th annual Fresno Greek Festival at the church grounds, 2219 N. Orchard St., Fresno, Aug. 28-30 (Friday, 4 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, 11 a.m. to midnight; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) Tickets are $6 for adults and seniors and free for children age 12 and younger. The event includes 40 Greek-themed vendors along with cooking demonstrations, a kids play area, shuttle service and Greek wine tasting. The Greek Fest donates to a number of organizations and this year will also start donating to a fund for the St. Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center. ‘Exhale’ event at NorthPointe
An “Exhale” event aimed at giving women renewed strength, hope and energy will be held at NorthPointe Community Church, 4625 W. Palo Alto Ave., Fresno, on Aug. 28. Choice Books fundraiser dinner
A fundraiser dinner for nonprofit Choice Books, which distributes books with a Christian message, will be held at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 17 at Wedgewood Banquet Center, 4584 W. Jacquelyn Ave., Fresno. International student event seeks sponsors
The Interfaith Alliance of Central California is asking for sponsors to help host a dinner for Fresno State international students on Aug. 28. The goal is to familiarize the students with community centers and houses of worship in Fresno, and introduce them to cultural and social events in town. The event is not open to the general public. Saint John’s Bible at Saint Agnes Medical Center
Saint Agnes Medical Center, 1303 E. Herndon Ave., Fresno, has a full-size fine art reproduction of the original Saint John’s Bible on display on the second floor of the hospital’s north wing. Saint Agnes is the only institution in California to have one of these limited copies. The original manuscript is more than 1,100 pages and divided into seven volumes measuring 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide. The Saint Agnes Foundation raised $145,000 to secure the seven-volume set.
