Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
Jewish congregations will be celebrating the High Holy Days, a 10-day period beginning the evening of Sunday, Oct. 2, with Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, and ending with Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. Fundraiser for injured correctional officers
A barbecue fundraiser will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, to support two correctional officers, Toamalama Scanlan and Juanita Davila, who were shot in the main lobby of Fresno County Jail on Sept. 3. Barbeque meals can be purchased for $10 during the Backing the Badges fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. at New Hope Community Church, 4620 E. Nees Ave., Clovis. If writing a check, make payable to the Fresno Deputy Sheriff’s Association with “Injured Officers Fund” in the memo line.
New Youth for Christ campus
Fresno/Madera Youth for Christ opened a new Campus Life Center at 8681 N. Chestnut Ave. Fresno. The facility spans close to 2 1/2 acres and includes a newly remodeled ranch-style house (with a game room, cafe, meeting rooms and group space) outdoor patios and swimming pool. Youth for Christ has been working with students, incarcerated youth and teen parents for more than 70 years. More information is available online at yfcnow.org.
Speakers at Mennonite Brethren
College Community Church Mennonite Brethren Church, 2529 Willow Ave., Clovis, will host two speakers Sunday, Oct. 2. At 9:30 a.m., Cindy Jurado Hernandez, director of College Hour and chapel programs for Fresno Pacific University’s Office of Spiritual Formation, will present “The Second Beatitude, Blessed are Those Who Mourn.” She has led multiple trips to Central and South America. During the Adult Christian Education Hour at 11 a.m., Rabbi Amnon Shor of Bet Shalom Messianic Congregation will present “Principles of Judaism.”
Harvest of Harmony anniversary celebrations
Harvest of Harmony International Church, 5242 N. Garfield Ave., Fresno, will celebrate its 20th anniversary with two weeks of events in early October. The “Twenty Years of Unfailing Expectations” celebrations begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, with guest speaker Monica Gort from Stockton, followed by Bishop Robert Hooks of Visalia speaking at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9. The following week, Paul Binon will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, as the prelude to the main anniversary reunion gala at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, featuring comedian J-Red, recording artist Terrell Griffin and others. Phillip Goudeaux from Calvary Christian Center in Sacramento will speak at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, to close the festivities. Diocesan Congress and Youth Day
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno will host its Diocesan Congress and Youth Day on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Visalia Convention Center, 303 E. Acequia Ave. The event includes workshops in Spanish, English, Vietnamese, Korean and Hmong, and a special “young adult track” for those between the ages of 18 and 29. Keynote speakers are Deacon Alex Jones presenting in English, and Jose Antonio Medina and Patricia Jimenez in Spanish. The event includes 40 vendors sharing religious articles and books.
