One of Clovis' tiniest shops is now home to a local custom jewelry maker.

William Box Handmade Jewelry & Gifts opened at 421 1/2 Pollasky Avenue, the 5-foot-wide, 20-foot-deep store that has just enough room for the owner's workbench and a display area.

William Box has been making wire-wrapped jewelry for years.

"I'd make them for my kids and they'd come back with orders from other kids in high school," he says.

He started selling his work at local events and doing arts and crafts shows around the state. He expanded into the shop on Pollasky Avenue in October.

Box often wraps quartz or other gemstones in wire so people can wear them as necklaces. Lately, he's been turning a collection of vintage spoons, knives and forks into bracelets, pendants, key fobs and rings.

One of his specialties is making necklaces with names spelled out in wire. The designs are popular with young people with unusual name spellings who don't usually have an opportunity to buy something with their name on it, he said.

He does a lot of custom work.

"I'm attracting folks who have ideas but don't know how to express them," he says. "They're bringing me keepsakes and treasures that they've always wanted to wear."

Box turns them into jewelry.

Sometimes it's an image — like the logo of a local ranch — that Box helps a person turn into a wearable piece of art.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. You can see more of Box's designs online at www.facebook.com/willbendswire or www.williambox.com.
