In the world of local craft beer, Richard Smith is the king of chug.
The 29-year-old has posted dozens of online videos of himself downing – almost magically and in mere seconds – pints of delicious craft beer.
Yes, chugging craft beer is a thing. It was even a viral video challenge in 2014 that was mostly done by shirtless dudes in their kitchens from what I gather. Smith has become a known figure on the Central Valley Craft Beer Drinkers Facebook page and even spawned an imitator or two.
The videos play into Smith’s competitive nature and the “races” he used to have with his cousins in elementary school.

“We would race around the block. Who can put on their shoes the fastest? Who can eat their cereal the fastest?” Smith says.
“We also used to chug water.”
Some of the beer he’s chugged – a $30 bottle of Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze – are extremely hard to come by. That doesn’t sit right with some hardcore craft beer fans. So, Smith does get his share of hate messages (though it’s not like he’s just pouring the beer down the sink, which is also a thing, oddly).
Mostly, the messages he gets from the videos are positive.
“It’s important to let people know it’s just beer,” he says.
“The craft been scene is the most loving, friendly environment I’ve ever been in. There are so many options out there that will please just about anyone. If your not already drinking craft beer you should start soon.”
