Coldwater Creek in Fig Garden is no more.
The women's clothing retailer closed all its stores after filing for bankruptcy and the going-out-of-business sale is over.
So that means there is a large, somewhat prominent space up for rent in the shopping center. The store is in a corner spot between Banana Republic and Heart & Sole comfort shoes.
This is one of those fun moments where Fresnans get to dream about what they'd like to see in Fig Garden at a time when the shopping center will be listening.
Never miss a local story.
If you'd like to weigh in, go to my blog on this topic at www.fresnobeehive.com and share your thoughts in the comments. Readers have already shared ideas there and on social media.
One store that shoppers would love to see here is Crate & Barrel. The trendy furniture and decor store ranges from affordable to upscale. It's one of the stores Fresnans visit when they're out of town. The retailer has more than 170 stores, including one in Roseville, Calif., and is owned by a German company.
However, the stores are typically much larger than the 6,000-square-foot space Coldwater Creek left behind.
Other shoppers would love to see a Farrell's Ice Cream, which would be a return as the ice cream parlor and restaurant once had a location in Fig Garden Village. Though since Fig Garden already has an ice cream shop, Cold Stone Creamery, that could get sticky.
Other ideas from readers: A small, independent movie theater, a music venue, a book store (remember when we had one of those in Fig Garden?), an electronics store such as Fry's, an antique mall, an upscale hardware store or a library.
The leasing agent and the shopping center representatives did not return messages about the space as of my deadline.
A bigger Heart
Also in Fig Garden Village, comfort shoe shop Heart & Sole has more than doubled in size after taking over the empty shop next door.
The expansion allows it to carry more shoes, more colorful, funky socks and to start carrying men's shoes for the first time.
It also recently started selling the brands Arcopedico, Keen and Gentle Souls and expanded the brightly colored Bernie Mev shoes with Memory Foam.
The store specializes in carrying wide-width shoes and shoes capable of fitting orthotic inserts, but the expansion has also allowed Heart & Sole to bring in more accessories, including hand-painted purses and wallets.
Owner Lisa Arthur is also tapping into the trendy novelty socks that are popular lately. The store carries even more socks with whimsical images of avocados, owls and Abraham Lincoln and one of Frida Kahlo that frequently sells out.
"We have a big following for them. The groovier they get, the more artistic they get — they love it" she says of customers.
The store used to be Kumfs Shoes before Arthur bought it and renamed it Heart & Sole in 2012.
The first Stein Mart in Clovis is scheduled to open Friday.
The newly built store is the latest to open in the Clovis Crossing Regional Shopping Center at Herndon and Clovis avenues.
The store sells women's and men's clothing, home decor, shoes and linens at up to 60% off brand name prices. Departments include petite and plus-size women's clothing.
Fresno already has a Stein Mart at Shaw and Marks avenues that opened 14 years ago and is a tad bigger than the new store. A company spokesman said Stein Mart has enough customers in the area to support two stores.
The first Rue 21 clothing store in the Fresno-Clovis area opened Thursday. It's at 625 W. Herndon Ave., in the Target shopping center at Willow Avenue.
The store, which has locations in Madera and Tulare, sells affordable trendy clothing for each season, along with accessories and jewelry for men and women.
This store is a little different than other Rue 21 stores in that it carries a larger selections of men's clothing. That means more jeans, shirts and accessories for guys.
