Jerseydale Campground
I usually go camping the weekend before Memorial Day each year to get myself in outdoors-mode for the season, and before the rush of summer activity. This year, I headed to Jerseydale U.S. Forest Service Campground for the weekend of May 18-20.
Though a short, two-night trip, it was just enough to temporarily satisfy my appetite for the great outdoors.
There are good trails in the area, for both hiking and four-wheeling.

'A wonderful man'
Most obituaries are written by family members. But sometimes your paper runs an obituary for a local community leader written by someone on your staff.
For a few days now, I've been looking for one for Rusty DeRuiter. I knew Rusty from his days as a YMCA camp director at Sequoia Lake in the 1970s. Rusty hired and managed wonderful young people to run the camp and counsel kids. The camps were fun and spiritual at the same time.
After he left the YMCA, Rusty served the community in Reedley by becoming a teacher. I know his door was always open to old friends, because I was with a group that arrived after dark one summer night many years ago, and we were warmly received by Rusty and his wife, Linda.

Now apply online for Yosemite camps
Reservations for Yosemite's High Sierra Camps are notoriously hard to get. For the summer of 2010, applications will be available online for the first time.
All applications submitted before the Nov. 1 deadline will be entered into the annual lottery.
"For decades, the only way to enter the High Sierra Camp lottery was to submit a hard-copy application to our Fresno reservations office and wait for three months," said Dan Jensen, chief operating officer for DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite. "Those days are over."
Are you hosting a summer camp for kids this season? The Fresno Bee is putting together its annual roundup of summer activities for children in the Fresno area.
Entries will be accepted through Sunday, May 10.
Direct questions to Anita Talley at (559) 441-6356 or atalley@fresnobee.com.
The Bee will publish a list of summer programs later in May.
