My fascination with glass art continues.

For the July 3 ArtHop in downtown Fresno and the Tower District, I made sure I dropped in at the Gallery 25 new members show. Joseph Morel, a glass instructor at California State University, Fresno, is one of the four featured artists. The others are Avetik Atoian, Diran Lyons and Norma Rogers.

Morel's pieces include "The Brothers." What's interesting is that it started out as a planned political commentary involving five elongated glass pieces affixed to a steel base. But the concept changed when one of the pieces cracked and shattered.

Suddenly, the idea shifted from the political to the personal. Morel, one of five brothers, had lost one of them, Pat Morel, years ago. The broken glass, which is part of the piece, also happened to be the one with the most variations of color. Morel says: "It was like Pat was saying 'I want this to be about this.' "

Just around the corner, at Corridor 2122, the exhibit was "Liberty," a group show.

From the personal to the political, the pieces, as a representative for the gallery wrote about the show, try "to ask questions about an idea that is fundamental to our society and is most often taken for granted."

It is a small show, but it can spur plenty of discussion.
