Looking for somewhere new and different to visit for tonight's monthly Art- Hop event covering downtown and the Tower District?

For this open house of galleries, studios and museums, consider these two out of-the-ordinary options:

- DeRouchey Creative Design Studio for the third year opens its doors for a group show by local artists. In "Variations of Flight," the emphasis is on the process by which objects move either through the air within or beyond our atmosphere. The show includes digital photography, works in acrylic and mixed media on canvas, granite and stone.

Featured artists include Phil DeRouchey, David Bogdanov, Samuel J. Tekunoff, Uriel Tekunoff, Stephanie Hahn, Justin Yando, Tommy Cardoza, Edgar Vargas and Michael Soldani.

The 5-9 p.m. free event, with a reception at 6 p.m., extends the normal 5-8 p.m. ArtHop hours, but unlike most ArtHop attractions that last through the month, this show is one night only.

The studio, at 1803 S. Van Ness Ave., occupies the former Central California Beef Processors building. Details: Click for site fresnoartscouncil.org.

- Fulton's Folly Antique Collective, at 920 E. Olive Ave., features a reception for Brazil native Christina Motta, whose professional career began in 1969 with drawings and oil paintings.

She has shown her works in collective exhibitions and more than 25 individual exhibitions in Brazil and other south American countries. She now lives in Fresno.

Her works will be exhibited through November. Details: (559) 268-3856.

Other ArtHop highlights this month include:

- Lyssa Bird, a graduate student in photography at California State University, Fresno, holds her graduate exhibit at Spectrum Art Gallery. Bird explains that she lost her husband in 1998 in a single-vehicle accident, and the installation at Spectrum, titled "Nos Recordamos" ("We Remember"), is an examination of the individualistic ways and means by which some people appropriate small private spaces out of public places in order to grieve.

The exhibition runs through Nov. 28. Details: spectrumphotogallery.org, (559) 266-0691.

- Juliana Harris represents the California Contemporary Art Collective with a new exhibit titled "14 Waterfalls" in the windows of the historic Warnors Theatre, 1400 Fulton St. The collective has been rotating the display space among its member artists. Harris' exhibit will be on view through December.

She notes that she chose waterfalls for a public art project because she liked the idea of focusing on the most hotly debated topic in this Valley.

"Waterfalls not only represent power; they are power," she writes. "Their uncontrollable force is dependent upon a lasting source. There are many metaphors one can draw; suffice it to say, waterfalls are icons worthy of contemplation, and they are large, bold, vertical shapes - perfect for the windows."

Because the sun is setting early this time of year, ArtHoppers are encouraged to bring "flashlights, headlamps, lanterns, light sabers and other forms of portable light" to illuminate the windows from the sidewalk. Details: Click for site julianaharris.com.

- At Gallery 25, 660 Van Ness Ave., Robert Weibel's "Exploding the Image: New Gunpowder Prints" will feature his trademark works in which he uses gunpowder in a process of contemporary artistic expression. Details: (559) 264-4092, Click for site gallery25.org.

- At Fig Tree Gallery, 644 Van Ness Ave., Mary Maughelli exhibits recent works on paper in an exhibit titled "Looking Inward." Details: (559) 485-0460, Click for site figtreeartgallery.com.
