Author Sandra Cisneros to have 'Conversation' with Fresno

Before Sandra Cisneros, the famed Latina writer whose 1984 book "The House on Mango Street" has become a staple in American classrooms, ever came to Fresno, she already knew the city because of one of its best-known poets.

"I remember the first time I came to Fresno I pointed to the sign -- I screamed and said, 'Fresno! The home of Gary Soto!' " she says. "I've always been a big fan of Gary Soto. I know Fresno because of poetry, and I'm so thrilled to come to be able to share." Read more →

'Inspiracion' honors Rivera protege Esperanza Martinez

Esperanza Martinez, a trailblazing Mexican-born artist who was a select private pupil of legendary muralist Diego Rivera, is the subject of a major new exhibition at Arte Americas.

Paintings, drawings and private letters are featured in "Inspiracion: Original Works by Esperanza Martinez." The artist -- working in oils, pencil, charcoal and ceramic paint -- was best known for her portraits and genre paintings of rural Mexican farmers, indigenous Mexicans and Native American subjects. 'Treading Mud' opens at Broken Leg Stage

In "Treading Mud," an original play by R.S. Scott, four characters who have been friends since grade school navigate complex adult relationships. Eric Day directs this show from Jump Right In Productions, a recently formed theater company with a focus on original work. 'ART' performance has a lot to overcome

California Public Theater misses the mark with its new production at The Voice Shop of "ART," the 1995 French play by Yasmina Reza that tweaked the contemporary art world and delighted Broadway. Instead of a nimble journey pursuing lofty issues of aesthetics and human nature, we get a slog.

There are four characters in the show -- three men and a painting. When Serge (Anthony Taylor), a dermatologist, shells out a huge wad of cash for an all-white painting by a famous artist, he can't wait to show it to his two best friends, Marc (Eric Estep) and Yvan (Steve Olsen). The pair is less than impressed, however, particularly Marc, who seems to take Serge's purchase as a personal affront. Read more →
