In a year that's been hard on many, it shouldn't come as a surprise that many of this year's Faces of Christmas lend a hand to the homeless. But there are many other ways that the people included in this 17-year-old holiday tradition distinguish themselves.
The basics: Dr. Jose Luis Bautista, 57, of Fresno, has run medical practices in Fresno and Sanger for nearly 21 years. He is married and a father of five.
The basics: Dr. René Charles, 60, is an obstetrician and gynecologist in Dinuba. He works at rural health clinics in Dinuba, Caruthers, Selma and Parlier, and also has a private practice. He is married and has three grown sons.
The basics: Vicki Cooksey, 59, of Fresno is a part-time reading tutor. She and her husband, Jerry, have three grown children.
The basics: Madeline Glenn, 64, of Fresno, is a member of Northwest Church. She and husband Trevor have been married for 28 years. She has two stepchildren, ages 52 and 50. The couple also has a quasi-adopted son, age 40, and seven grandchildren.
The basics: Betty Goertzen, a grandmother of four, owns Develop Design Do It, a Fresno event planning business she started in 1997. She and husband Elvin take care of their son Bryan, who has cerebral palsy, and their adopted daughter Kandyce Cummings lives in Roseville.
The basics: Larry Kong, 58, is a medication delivery man for Sacramento Overnight. He is married to Kim Kong, and has two young children.
The basics: Wilbert Rimper, 59, is a retired musician and ex-police officer who lives in Clovis with his wife. He has two grown children who live in Europe and work in the performing arts industry.
The basics: Sereniti Scott, 17, is a senior at Clovis West High who takes morning classes at the Center for Advanced Research and Technology. She is a track athlete who finished eighth in the Central Section last year in the 300-meter hurdles competing for Central High, and plans to compete this spring for Clovis West. She plans to attend San Francisco State next fall and major in theater.
The basics: Dewayne Stewart, 51, is a pastor at Feed My Sheep Ministries in Fresno. He has three children, sons who live in Riverside and Fresno and a daughter who lives in Fresno.
The basics: Bernice Tyler, 48, works as a patient care technician at an assisted living facility. Her husband, Vernon L. Tyler, owns and operates a welding business in Selma, where the couple live.
The basics: Frank Venegas, 33, of Clovis is a volunteer with AmeriCorps, the national volunteer service program. Venegas, who is single, graduated from Kingsburg High School and is a student with the University of Phoenix.
The basics: Cherie Williams-Muller, 59, of Fresno, is a recently retired adaptive physical-education teacher for Fresno Unified School District. She has two sons, Randy C. Williams, 23, and Paul Williams, 20.
