Be honest. You try to watch most of the more than 400 scripted shows on the networks, cable, premium cable and streaming services. That’s the only way you can join in the conversation the next day with fellow workers or with friends.
The truth is there’s no way to accomplish that goal. So there are shows that you never see. One might be “You’re the Worst.” There have been two seasons of the FXX comedy, with a third set to start Wednesday, Aug. 31. But you wouldn’t know series star Chris Geere if he bagged your groceries last week.
Help is on the way. Here’s a quick study sheet so that when everyone is talking about the third season opener, you can jump into the conversations safe with the knowledge that Geere wasn’t at your market.
Never miss a local story.
Basic knowledge: The show comes from Stephen Falk, whose credits include “Weeds” and “Orange Is the New Black.” The series takes a modern look at love and happiness as told through the eyes of two people who haven’t been very successful with either.
That was simple. Now, on to step two.
The players: The only two you really need to know are writer Jimmy (Geere) and PR executive Gretchen (Aya Cash). For bonus points, a little knowledge of Jimmy’s roommate, Edgar (Desmin Borges), and Gretchen’s best friend, Lindsay (Kether Donohue), is good.
Geere is an English actor who was in “After Earth.”
On playing a character who doesn’t show his emotions easily, Geere says, “I think they feel everything that the average couple would feel, but not necessarily in the right order. So, you know, they would never do anything by the book.”
Cash was born in San Francisco. Credits include “We Are Men,” “The Newsroom” and “Traffic Light.”
On playing a character who doesn’t show her emotions easily, Cash says, “ I think couples create their own language and their own way to define things outside of what society says something is. And a word like ‘love’ is very, very loaded, and it’s just about them redefining what that word is going to mean to them and how they express it.”
Borges is a New York resident who has worked on “Castle” and “The Mysteries of Laura.”
On what is coming this season for Edgar, Borges says, “I feel like a lot of last season for Edgar was about him finally taking the plunge into actually attempting to transition into ‘civilianhood’ as best as he can. I think this season is really about taking ownership for who you are and how you want the next phase of your life to be.”
Donohue is a New York native whose credits include “Pitch Perfect” and as the voice of Lily on “Kappa Mikey.”
On playing such a wild character, Donohue says, “I just love the wackiness that it can go to, but the fact that, in the writing, it is grounded in a real place; and therefore, it’s, you know, interesting to read and, hopefully, watch.”
Armed with that knowledge, you should be able to chat with ease about the new season of “You’re the Worst.”
