* “Up” Grade A: A grumpy old man and a young boy sail away to an animated adventure. The computer-generated film features the voice of Ed Asner.

This offering is a long way from the light entertainment of a “Toy Story” or “Monsters, Inc.” It features the same first-rate animation, but the movie often has a very emotional side that goes a long way toward making this effort remarkably touching.

* “The Ugly Truth” Grade C: Gerard Butler says he’ll coach Katherine Heigl on how to land a man.

It is only fitting that “The Ugly Truth,” a movie about relationships, would have trouble committing.

At times, the new helium-light romantic comedy wants to be a broad, bawdy comedy. Then it tries to be the kind of romance story you want your parents to see.

Too much indecision by director Robert Luketic has the film fighting itself from beginning to end.

* “The Official Major League Baseball World Series Film Collection” Grade A: This is a must own for any baseball fan. The 20-disc set features 65 World Series films covering 1943-2008 plus a commemorative book that touches on past World Series moments.

Just a few of the memorable moments in this DVD collection include the amazing over-the-shoulder catch by Willie Mays, Carlton Fisk’s dramatic home run for Boston, the perfect game pitched by Don Larsen and the home run display put on by Reggie Jackson.

This set is a grand slam. TV and movie critic Rick Bentley can be reached at rbentley@fresnobee.com or (559) 441-6355. Read his blog at fresnobeehive.com.
