Local band Inflight Nymphs has a new member, a new sound and a new CD -- all of which you can hear tonight at Audie's Olympic.
The band -- made up of Jessica Taylor (vocals, piano, guitar), Janell Bowen (bass), Audrey Johnson (drums) -- has been going since 2006, having two albums before its latest, "Scatter and Stray."
We talked to Taylor to learn more about Inflight Nymphs, its new CD and what it has planned for tonight.
Question: Give us the quick back story on Inflight Nymphs.
Answer: Well, the band started out originally as a duo. Janell joined the band in 2007 after going to one of our shows in L.A.
When we all mutually decided to go in different directions and part ways with our original drummer, a friend told us about Audrey and she has been with us since March.
Describe your style and influences.
We all have different influences from punk to country, but we have an appreciation for all genres.
We approach each song individually, so we play what that song makes us feel instead of playing a part that fits a certain style.
What stands out about your new album, "Scatter and Stray?"
Every song has a different feel and sound. It's not an album of love songs.
Because of the honesty in the songs, people of all ages and backgrounds can relate to them.
How do you think your sound has progressed over the band's three albums?
Well, we had a more somber sound that used to include spoken word on the previous albums.
For "Scatter & Stray," we have a new lineup that we feel is solid, which allows us to be more creative. The sound is a bit more upbeat and driven but still has the mellow elements from before.
I've heard there are pros and cons of being an all-female band. What do you think?
Yeah, we do agree with that.
It seems that most people have this preconceived idea of what a girl band is going to sound like, which may keep them from giving us a chance. We don't want to be just "good for a girl band;" that's insulting.
However, it's a double-edged sword; it can at times work in our favor or set us apart because there are not a lot of all-girl bands in general.
Describe your live show in exactly 11 words.
An unfiltered event that stimulates the mind and intoxicates the heart.
Where will people be able to pick up the new album?
We are having a CD release show for "Scatter & Stray" tonight at Audie's Olympic in the Tower District.
Show starts at 9:30 p.m. Cosmic Hayride will be opening for us. Our CD will also be available on our Web page: www. myspace.com/inflight nymphs.
