Shrieking fans can quickly spoil a good concert
There should be special sections at concerts for whistlers and whoopers.
We are finally able to attend concerts now that my husband is retired and the kids are on their own. Our first was Simon and Garfunkel. We bought our tickets early and looked forward to it.
My husband had surgery that makes his ears sensitive, so we chose seats one row from the top. Two middle-aged ladies sat behind us. The whoops began with the first song and continued throughout the program. I considered asking them if they would like to trade seats so they would at least be in front of us. Instead we left early.

Incomplete success
The Big Fresno Fair drew a remarkable attendance and offered a few new attractions. I attended each of the 12 days in order to admire the Pirate Ship, to view the Fresno County 150-year exhibit, to visit with friends (many of whom are regular vendors I've met over the past nine years), and to attend the horse races. The photography entries were competitive, as were the junior exhibit drawing entries.
What was not impressive was the entertainment lineup. I learned why from a conversation with one of the concert sound crew. Apparently, the Fair Board chose to enlist the services of a professional entertainment outfit that failed the listening audience by not scheduling a jazz artist, by not seeking current top-chart country artists and by including a poorly attended comedy act. In short, the event was not a complete success.

7 hurt when winds topple tent at Fla. State Fair
Authorities say high winds knocked over a tent during the Florida State Fair's opening day, injuring seven people who had to be taken to the hospital.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said in a press release that three of those sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries when the tent was upended Friday at the fairgrounds in Tampa. The others had minor injuries.
High winds and heavy rain on the leading edge of a cold front sweeping through west-central Florida led the National Weather Service to issue a tornado watch until 8 p.m.

Setting it straight
The Spanish Brass Quintet concert scheduled for Sunday at the Warnors Theatre has been canceled. An item about the concert appears today on Page 4 of the 7 section, which was printed before concert promoters announced the cancellation.
The threat of rain means an uncertain fate for upcoming dates in The Big Fresno Fair’s concert series.
Fair officials said Monday that performers have ultimate discretion on whether to cancel a concert should it rain.
“We’re telling people to bring their umbrellas,” said fair spokeswoman Danielle Lebouef. “A lot of artists want to perform no matter what.”
The fair has concerts with contemporary Christian singer Michael W. Smith (tonight), Tex-Mex rockers Los Lobos (Wednesday) and Stone Temple Pilots (Thursday). Lebouef recalls it sprinkling some at concerts in recent years and the show continuing. The seating area at the fair’s Paul Paul Theatre is not covered, but part of the stage is.
If a concert is canceled, the fair would refund the cost of tickets.
