As you see elsewhere in these pages, Fresno is having a hoppin' weekend of live music.
But be warned, you'll find the most unusual show of the weekend Saturday night at Starline, 831 E. Fern Ave., where A Band of Orcs headline.
A Band of Orcs are a metal-playing group of, ummm, middle-earth monsters. At least that's why the fantasy worlds of "Lord of the Rings" movies and "Magic: The Gathering" card games would have us believe.
Or A Band of Orcs could just be a metal band that goes the extra mile in costuming and mythology.
We'll let you decide for yourself.
While the Orcs claim they are naturally prone to pillaging and destroying the world, their manager says he has civilized them enough so that they can "play live shows among you humans without slaying and eating you."
We greatly appreciate it.
Their show is open to all ages and starts at 8 p.m.
Red Castle Army, Savage Machine, Obsidian Seraph and Atomic Violence also are on the bill.
Tickets cost $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Tickets are available at Boba Fusion, 314 E. Bullard Ave.
Bowling & Blues
Recently renovated Freeway Lanes in Selma is hosting a little live music to celebrate.
Blues band MoFo Party Band will play a dance-worthy set starting at 9 p.m. Saturday.
There's also a barbecue starting at 7 p.m. and a $400 prize to the 400th person through the door. Tickets cost $15.
Organizers hope it's the first of more concerts at the Selma bowling alley.
Quite Hip
Here's the hippest show of the weekend: Bay Area psychedelic folk band The Mother Hips play at 9 p.m. Friday at Audie's Olympic, 1426 N. Van Ness Ave.
The band started in the '90s and were at one point signed by super-producer Rick Rubin. After a break-up and reunion, the Mother Hips are poised to release a new album, "Pacific Dust," on Oct. 27.
For their Fresno show, Rademacher and Strange Vine also are playing. Cover is $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
Micropixie
Micropixie, a soulful, lyrical, female vocalist, performs Thursday at California State University, Fresno, in a concert sponsored by the women's studies department.
Micropixie was born in Bombay, raised in England and now lives in the Bay Area. Her music is a bit other-worldly, as evident by her debut album, "Alice in Stevie Wonderland."
The concert is at 6 p.m. in the Alice Peters Auditorium. There's no cover.
Have A Harp?
Downtown Visalia is hosting a free harmonica festival on Saturday.
Harmonica players of all ages, styles and skill levels are welcome to come play from noon to 4 p.m. at Visalia Brewing Company and Steve's Place, 112 W. Main St.
Radio station KVLP (FM, 101.5) organized the event and also will be collecting unwanted musical instruments that can be donated to school music programs.
