UPDATE 2 p.m. Jan. 21: Frank Gabriel Campos, scheduled as guest soloist in Sunday’s Fresno Community Concert Band performances, was injured Wednesday in an automobile accident on the way to the airport to catch his flight to Fresno. He was traveling from Ithaca, New York to the Syracuse airport. He sustained serious injuries and was treated and released.
The concerts, titled “Super Concert X,” will go on as scheduled.
“We all regret that he will not be appearing with the band but send heartfelt wishes for a speedy and complete recovery,” said conductor Robert Nielsen.
Cooper Walden, principal trumpet for the Tulare County Symphony Orchestra and an instructor at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, will step in for Campos to play Alexander Arutanian’s Concerto for Trumpet. Walden has performed with the International Mozart Competition Orchestra, the Tirolean Opera Festival Orchestra in Erl, Austria, the Jeju City Symphony in South Korea, and the Volgograd Symphony Orchestra in Russia.
Never miss a local story.
A trumpet master class featuring Campos scheduled for Saturday is cancelled.
The rest of the concert is devoted to movie music. The program includes a tribute to James Horner, composer of music from “Titanic,” “Legend of Zorro” and “Avatar.”
