Thanks to the recent Hollywood film version, “Into the Woods” this year is a popular title among community theaters across the nation. Children’s Musical Theaterworks offers its take on the Stephen Sondheim musical with a production opening Friday, March 20, featuring performers ages 10-20. It’s the first CMT directorial outing for local theater veteran Brandon Delsid, an alum of the company. We caught up with him to learn five things you should know about “Into the Woods, Jr.”
As the only “Junior” production happening in Fresno, it’s kid-friendly! CMT strives to do shows that appeal to kids and are appropriate for all ages. With the recent release of the movie we wanted to get this fantastic show out to Fresno audiences, but in a family-friendly way. It still has the magical Sondheim score but eliminates a few of the darker elements.
Never miss a local story.
CMT talent past and present come together. This show features a cast of wonderful new and veteran CMT performers, as well as alumni in crew, sound, makeup costumes and much more. I’ve been performing with CMT off and on for 10 years and am ecstatic to direct my first show here. It’s been a wonderful experience and I’m so happy for the opportunity.
Fantastic costumes and makeup. Our makeup and costume designers, Adamme Sosa and Trina Short, have made a one-of-a-kind show. They’ve gone out of their way to create designs from scratch that are stunning on the Fresno Memorial Auditorium’s historic stage.
Amazing scenic design. Our set is GIGANTIC! It has a unique and modern feel that our set designer Vye Robinson hand-crafted, from a 40-foot-long ramp to a 20-foot tower. Every last detail is hand-placed down to the smallest piece of moss.
• 5. A cast of 10-20-year-olds. We have a stellar group of kids that I think are some of Fresno’s most talented up-and-coming actors and singers. They came in with a fervor and excitement for the piece that I was thrilled by. They’re definitely ready for an audience and to perform everything they’ve been working so hard on the past six weeks.
