Barbershop: The Next Cut (PG-13)
Directed by: Malcolm D. Lee
Starring: Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Regina Hall, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve, Common, Nicki Minaj, Anthony Anderson.
The pitch: The staff at a neighborhood barbershop/salon in Chicago becomes concerned about all of the violence in the streets. They put together a plan to create at least one safe weekend.
The formula: Start with a lather of the previous “Barbershop” movies. Take a little off the sides of “Beauty Shop.” Comb out some bits of “black-ish.”
Go see it: If you enjoy good comedy, especially the work of Cedric the Entertainer.
Don’t go see it: If you hate comedies that try to make a point. This film has a serious point to make about street violence.
Spinoff: Minaj has a way of stealing every scene. There should be a spinoff where her wild character can have more room to play.
