If you have programmed your remote to make local channels your favorites on the Comcast lineup or memorized where to find them on your cable, get ready to deal with some changes.
On or around Aug. 25, Comcast plans to shuffle many of the local digital channels to other places on lineup.
It’s only the second and/or third digital channel for a local station — currently found on the Comcast lineup between channels 187 - 201 — that are moving. Primary channels at the lowest end of the Comcast lineup — such as ABC30, KSEE24, FOX26, CBS47 and ValleyPBS — won’t change.
Channels 187-201 are included in all Comcast packages, even the limited basic.
Never miss a local story.
The reason for the shift is that the cable provider wants to group similar channels. Room to add more local digital channels was getting thin and there’s more opportunity to add digital channels at the higher spot on the lineup.
Two of the digital channels currently on the Comcast lineup — KAIL 7.2 and 7.3 — are being dropped. KAIL 7.2 carries Cozi TV programming, while 7.3 offers a Heroes and Icons lineup. This is not connected to the upcoming shift. That move is in connection with the change of ownership at the local station. KAIL was sold by Tel-America North Corporation to Aperio Communications LLC for $3 million in April. This affected the re-transmission agreement between the new owners and Comcast.
Bob Jenkins, program director for KAIL, could not be reached for comment.
Gary Cocola, owner of Cocola Broadcasting, reports three of his stations are moving. The local TV station owner doesn’t see the change as being too tough on the local cable subscriber.
“In today’s universe, people finding channels is not that difficult. They know what number they want to watch and punch in the three-digit number,” Cocola says. “The only thing that they need to know is where the channels are moving. We will do our own campaign to let people know that, like ‘The Jeffersons,’ we are moving on up.”
Comcast is till working on where the channels would move but the changes they have announced so far include:
▪ KGMC Me TV, 187 to 375
▪ KVPT VME, 192 to 396
▪ KVPT Create, 194 to 395
▪ KMSG Azteca, 199 to 377
▪ KMSG Antenna TV, 200 to 378
There’s no information on the other local digital channels on the Comcast lineup: KMPH This TV, 189; KSEE LATV, 196; KFRE Estrella, 198; and KNSO Exitos, 201.
