“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” which gets a new StageWorks Fresno production opening Friday, Sept. 2, at the Fresno Art Museum, is an audience pleaser for a number of reasons:
It has an array of memorable child characters (played by adults), the words they’re asked to spell (and the sentences they’re used in) are frequently hilarious, there’s a smart and sentimental vibe to the tone of the show and – most of all – the music by William Finn is just gosh darn gorgeous.
But there’s another reason as well: “Spelling Bee” is an audience participation show. Four audience members are recruited at each performance beforehand to be part of the action. (And, yes, it means getting up on stage with the actors and actually having to spell.)
Which brings us to our Beehive ticket giveaway. You can win a four-pack of tickets to any of the musical’s opening weekend shows (7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday) at the Fresno Art Museum. Plus: In addition to the four tickets, you’ll win one guaranteed spot as an audience speller.
Never miss a local story.
Better yet: We’re giving away TWO of these four-packs. So you have two chances to win tickets (a $100 value) and a shot at spelling stardom (which is priceless, though I’m guessing that if you want to throw $10,000 or so at StageWorks, the company would gladly feature you as a guest speller if you want.)
Here’s how this giveaway works: You’ll have until 11 a.m. Friday to answer the following question: What word do you constantly misspell (or have to look up) in your daily life?
One comment/entry per person, please. The winner will be chosen at random and notified via Facebook message. The tickets will be available for the winner at the box office once you’ve picked your performance, and we’ll make the arrangements for the guest-speller gig. Be sure to check your Facebook messages by noon Friday to see if you’re a winner. I reserve the right to move on to another entry if I can’t get hold of you by that time.
Please note: If you’re a winner and want to be a guest speller, you’ll need to be at the theater at least half an hour early for orientation.
Recipients will be notified by Facebook message at the end of each giveaway period. No substitutions or transfer of winners/prizes. Prizes are not redeemable for cash. Some prizes may have due dates for redemption/use. Employees and immediate family of The Fresno Bee,fresnobee.com and any/all of the participating giveaway sponsors, are not eligible to win. By accepting a giveaway, recipient consents to allow the use of his/her name and/or photograph for advertising or similar promotions without further compensation. Winner releases all sponsors of liability regarding use and enjoyment of the prizes. Tax liabilities and insurance, if any, are sole responsibility of the winner. No purchase necessary to win.
