Artists You Should Know: Blu J'z

BLU J'Z

Reggie Silva's band, the Blu J'z, has been playing funked-up smooth jazz since 1998. It only recently returned from a hiatus to find itself with a whole new audience, thanks to the Internet and Silva's son, Richard Silva, who works double duty as the band's saxophone player and one-man promotion team.

You can see the band Aug. 29 at Arte Américas Nights in the Plaza series.

The basics: The Fresno-based five-piece band has opened for Boney James, David Sanborn and Brian Culbertson.

With Richard Silva promoting the band, it has received play on dozens of Internet and satellite radio stations and coverage in several national jazz magazines.

Affiliated: The Silvas recently started a website, www.smoothjazzfresno.com, to serve as a hub for the area's smooth jazz fans. They've also started a petition to get a smooth jazz radio station back on the air in Fresno.

Releases: "Feeling the Moment" was released in 2004. The band has songs written and is set to record the follow-up album in the next few months.

Find out more: See the band's website, www.theblujz.com, on Facebook and @theblujz on Twitter. Watch the full video interview with the Silvas at www.fresnobee.com/aysk.
