In Fresno, Tulare and Kings counties, four would-be candidates took advantage of a five-day extension to file papers to run for office in the June 3 primary election.
People considering a run for county supervisor races in the three counties were given extra time to enter when incumbents didn't file by Friday's deadline.
Three candidates also were added to the race for the Porterville City Council. Paul Sampietro, Tulare County's elections division manager, said Wednesday he's not certain whether the filing deadline should have been extended in the Porterville race. The candidates may have filed by Friday, but county officials did not review the filings until this week, he said.
The new Porterville candidates are Richard Laswell, who lists his occupation as counselor; Greg Shelton, listed as self-employed; and educator Brian Ward.
They bring the total to seven candidates fighting for three at-large seats. Filing last week were incumbents Cameron Hamilton, Pedro "Pete" Martinez, and Eduardo "Eddie" Hernandez and retired businessman Jerry Waller.
Patrick Isherwood of Tulare seized the extension to file his nomination Monday to run for the District 2 seat on the Tulare County Board of Supervisors. Isherwood, a probation administrator, joins Pete Vander Poel III, a company controller from Tulare, to replace Connie Conway on the board.
Conway opted to seek the Republican nomination for the 34th Assembly District seat now held by Assembly Member Bill Maze, R-Visalia, rather than run for a third four-year term on the county board. Maze is termed out.
In neighboring Kings County, no new filings were received during the extension period for the District 2 seat being vacated by John Rachford on the Board of Supervisors. That sets the field for June with Sidney Craighead, a retired teacher; businessman Terry Kwast; and Richard Valle, district director for Assembly Member Nicole Parra, D-Hanford.
In Fresno County, no one took advantage of the extension for the District 5 Supervisor seat being left by Bob Waterston, perhaps because the existing candidates already have well-established campaigns. Clovis City Council Member and independent businessman Nathan Magsig is facing businesswoman Debbie Poochigian for the seat.
