Fresno Unified trustee Pat Barr announced Monday that she plans to run for re-election to the school board of California's fourth-largest district.

Barr made her announcement Monday morning outside Bullard High School, surrounded by supporters that included former school board members and Assembly Member Juan Arambula.

Barr said she has proven herself by making "tough, painful decisions" in the cash-strapped district. She also recounted what she considers district successes, including the hiring of Superintendent Michael Hanson, the opening of two new elementary schools and plans for two others and the approval of a school nutrition policy.

In the future, Barr said she wants to focus on getting competitive compensation for district teachers and staff, raising academic achievement, improving safety and making the district attractive to students and parents.

"I want to make people want to send their kids to Fresno Unified," she said.

Barr, a retired schoolteacher, was elected in 2002 to represent the area around Bullard High School.

Candidates may file with the elections office from July 17 to Aug. 11.
