Fresno Co. sheriff candidates surprised
Fresno County's two candidates for sheriff were shaking their heads in disbelief Wednesday at the whisker-thin margin that separates them, and the month it may take to settle who won.
With all precincts reporting, Assistant Sheriff Margaret Mims led retired California Highway Patrol Capt. Calvin Minor by just 155 votes.
An estimated 20,000 absentee and provisional ballots remain to be counted about 13% of the roughly 154,000 ballots cast and elections officials expect the lead to flip-flop numerous times before an outright winner is declared.

Homecare union election challenged
Fresno County's 10,000 homecare workers have voted in a bitterly fought election to remain with their established union, according to a tally of votes Friday evening.
But the election results are being challenged.
A count of the votes Friday showed the Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers-West won by a 233-vote margin over the National Union of Healthcare Workers, said Steve Sanchez, interim program manager for the Fresno County Public Authority. The authority is the employer of record for the workers, who care for elderly and disabled people -- many of whom are family members.
Carol Mills appears to have won re-election to the Fresno Unified School District board of trustees by a margin of just 156 votes, the Fresno County Elections Office reported Wednesday.
The office has finished counting provisional and absentee ballots from the Nov. 4 election, and must complete a precinct-by-precinct audit before certifying results on Tuesday.
Mills received 42,542 votes, less than one percentage point more than the 42,386 votes received by Natalie Clark.
Clark said she hasn't considered whether she will ask for a recount, and needs to check with the Elections Office before making a decision.
If she wants a recount, she will have to pay for the costs in advance, said County Clerk Victor Salazar. He couldn't provide an estimate of the costs Wednesday.
Salazar said he is confident the results would stand, despite the narrow margin.
Wednesday's final unofficial results also show President-elect Barack Obama carried Fresno County by 5,649 votes, or two percentage points over John McCain, in the presidential race.
