Transportation is a marker of our freedom and independence — and that doesn’t change with age. A quick look at the numbers: More than 5.5 million drivers in California are over the age of 55. More than 2.5 million are over 70, according to information collected by the Hardford Financial Service Group.

Medical conditions, medication usage and reduced physical function can increase the risk of accidents and injury, especially after age 75, when the risk of being involved in a collision increases for every mile you drive. While the rate of risk for adults over age 75 is almost equal to that of drivers 16 to 24, the rate of fatalities increases after age 65 — significantly for those over 75, according to Hardford.

With this in mind, transportation services, like buses, trains, medi-vans and dial-a-rides, can be a safe and vital way to get you or your loved one from place to place.
