As we age, the ability to easily do simple daily tasks diminishes. According to one study, more than 28% of community-resident Medicare beneficiaries over age 65 had difficulty performing one or more specific activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, eating, etc.). An additional 12.9% reported difficulties with instrumental activities of daily living, such as preparing meals, managing money and using the telephone.
Moreover, a 2002 study conducted by Americans with Disabilities showed 52% of older persons reported some type of disability, either sensory, physical or mental. Almost 37% reported a severe disability and 16% reported the need for some type of assistance as a result. And the need only increases with age. Of people over 80, 57% reported a severe disability and 30% reported that they needed assistance, like that of a hearing aid, wheelchair or other mobility aid, or vision services.
