Independence is indeed a thing to be valued. Whether you are in your own home, senior apartment, assisted living facility or a nursing home, keeping your independence means maintaining the highest level of functionality.
But independence has its limits. Thirty percent (10.7 million) of noninstitutionalized older persons live alone (7.8 million women, 2.9 million men). As hard as it may be to ask, every now and again people need help. This becomes more apparent as we age. There are resources available — whether it’s from family members, faith-based community resources, nonprofit community programs or businesses. They can all help find options for housekeeping help, yard care, meals, transportation or nursing care.
