In 2006 nationwide, 19% of persons 65 and older were minorities. Of those, 8.3% were African-Americans. Persons of Hispanic origin represented 6.4% of the older population.

About 3.1% were Asian or Pacific Islander and less than 1% were American Indian or Native Alaskan. Those numbers may seem a little low, but over the coming years, those numbers will jump dramatically. As a senior in a minority group, it is sometimes difficult to find help regarding legal, financial, health or other issues — especially in a way that makes you feel comfortable and speaks to your cultural or linguistic needs.
