The 130th anniversary of Yosemite Chapel in Yosemite National Park today will be a day of celebration and special events.
The chapel, whose first service was June 7, 1879, is the centerpiece to nondenominational Yosemite Community Church and home to more than 400 weddings each year. From its main doors, congregants can see spectacular Yosemite Falls.
The church's pastor, the Rev. Brent Moore, says the celebrations will focus on the chapel's colorful history on the valley floor of Yosemite National Park. "If people want to dress in period, they are welcome to do so," Moore says.
The events:
A morning service at 9:15 a.m. will feature special guests, the Revs. Don Baldwin, who was the church's pastor from 1965 to 1969, and John A. Davis, who served 1969-88. Baldwin lives in Atascadero; Davis is from Nevada City.
Kim Strutt, who led some services when he visited the park with church youth groups, will be another special guest. He lives in North Hollywood.
Tom Bopp will give his rendition of organ music that Sir Arthur Sullivan performed for a memorial service honoring President Ulysses S. Grant at the chapel in July 1885.
A lecture on Arthur A. Pillsbury, a Yosemite photographer who predated Ansel Adams, will be given at 1 p.m. by Pillsbury's granddaughter, Melinda Pillsbury-Foster. A tour of the old village will follow.
A barbecue dinner will be from 4-6 p.m.
An evening service at 6:30 p.m. will feature music by Christian guitarist Sonny Salsbury, who has written several songs inspired by Yosemite National Park.
